Gold Miners ETF Surges Over 3% on Weak US Jobs Data and Price Recovery

Shares of the 易方达黄金矿业ETF (02824) climbed more than 3% during Thursday trading, with gains of 2.92% to reach HK$11.63 and turnover of HK$555,100 at the time of writing.

The rally comes after US private payroll data for August showed only 38,000 new jobs added, marking the lowest level since January and falling short of market expectations. Manufacturing and professional business services saw job contraction, revealing structural weakness in the employment landscape.

Following the data release, September rate-hike expectations cooled slightly, pressuring US Treasury yields and the dollar lower. Spot gold prices rebounded swiftly from around $4282 to above $4380 per ounce.

Industry analysts suggest continued employment weakness will further dampen rate-hike pricing, opening up room for gold price recovery. In the near term, markets face a complex mix of Fed policy expectations, Middle East geopolitical tensions, and key economic data, which is likely to amplify trading volatility in the sector.

The current pullback in gold-related equities alongside short-term price corrections may offer a strategic entry point for longer-term investors.

Public information shows the 易方达黄金矿业ETF tracks the Solactive Global Gold Miners Select Index, positioning investors in leading gold producers across core mining regions including China, the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Gold mining stocks typically exhibit significantly higher earnings leverage compared to physical gold during bull market cycles, making them a high-beta tool for capturing outsized returns in the precious metals sector.
