South Korea's August Exports Surge on Sustained Semiconductor Boom

South Korea's export momentum continued to strengthen in August, fueled by robust chip shipments driven by artificial intelligence demand and improving economic conditions. This strong performance leaves the central bank with little justification to soften its recently adopted hawkish stance following two consecutive rate hikes.

According to customs data released Tuesday, workday-adjusted exports climbed 72.5% year-on-year. Imports rose 22.5%, resulting in a trade surplus of $34.7 billion. On an unadjusted basis, exports grew 68.7% year-on-year, exceeding the revised 63% growth recorded for the full month of July.

Semiconductors remained the primary growth engine behind August's export performance. Official data indicated that external demand stayed resilient despite elevated energy prices and geopolitical tensions placing pressure on other industrial sectors. This further validated the central bank's decision last week to raise its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points for the second consecutive meeting.

Adding to the supportive backdrop, the central bank also revised its 2026 economic growth forecast upward from 2.6% to 3.3%, giving policymakers additional room to concentrate on keeping inflation in check. In July, headline inflation eased to 2.8%, a steeper decline than anticipated, while core inflation—which strips out volatile food and energy costs—edged up to 2.6%, signaling that underlying price pressures remain persistent.

Meanwhile, the economy expanded 0.6% quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter, surpassing economists' expectations.
