US Diesel Costs Hit Highest Point Since April Amid Global Supply Strains From Ongoing Wars

US diesel prices have surged to their highest level since the peak seen in early April during the war in Iraq, signaling that inflationary pressures are increasingly threatening the global economy as conflicts persist. According to the American Automobile Association, the national average retail price reached $5.688 per gallon on Tuesday. This figure sits just slightly below the peak recorded in April, which was the highest level since mid-2022. Diesel serves as the lifeblood of the global economy, powering trucking, agriculture, and construction, and the surge in retail prices is impacting both industries and consumers alike. This year, conflicts in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war have driven fuel prices higher. Moscow, traditionally a major supplier, has reduced its exports after multiple attacks on its refineries.

Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump urged American refiners at a closed-door meeting to boost domestic diesel and gasoline output, as he faces mounting cost-of-living pressures ahead of the November midterm elections. According to a White House official who requested anonymity, Trump made it clear he wants to lower fuel prices for Americans and asked executives how they could increase capacity. Banks such as Goldman Sachs have been warning about the tightness in the diesel market, emphasizing that attacks on refineries in the Middle East and Russia have strained an already stretched global capacity. Analysts at the bank noted in an August 28 report that with energy prices climbing, "diesel remains at the core of this rally."
