Japanese-listed firm Metaplanet Inc. has discovered that imitating the Bitcoin accumulation playbook of Strategy (MSTR.US) comes with severe consequences, as the company now faces roughly $1 billion in unrealized losses alongside mounting financial constraints. The company's entry price into the cryptocurrency market is notably less favorable than the industry standard set by its American counterpart.
Strategy (MSTR.US) maintains a Bitcoin cost basis of $75,385 per coin, whereas Metaplanet Inc. has accumulated its stash at an average purchase price of $102,502 — a 36% premium. The Japanese firm holds 43,000 Bitcoin coins from a total investment outlay of $4.41 billion. With Bitcoin closing last Friday near $77,600, the portfolio is underwater by roughly 24%, delivering returns that struggle to match the interest from a standard savings account.
Elevated operational costs are compounding the financial strain. Since initiating Bitcoin purchases in April 2024, Metaplanet Inc. has disclosed at least 7 billion yen (approximately $45 million) in operating expenses. This figure breaks down to 4.5 billion yen in issuance costs, 1.9 billion yen in collateralized credit interest, 298 million yen in preferred stock dividends, and 4.8 billion yen in SG&A expenses. When allocating a portion of those SG&A costs, total expenditures could exceed $70 million.
The financing strategy has evolved dramatically, moving from traditional interest-bearing bonds in mid-2024 to zero-coupon bonds with warrants in 2025, a shift that has significantly diluted shareholder value. As of June 30, 2026, the company has drawn down $414 million from its $500 million credit facility, utilizing 83% of the available capital. Data indicates that interest expenses for the first quarter of 2026 soared to 934 million yen — a staggering 300-fold increase from the 3 million yen recorded in the first half of 2025.
Wild swings in the stock price reflect the distress facing shareholders. While the common share price has roughly tripled since 2024, it has plunged 82% from its June 2025 peak. The stock has lost 14% year-to-date and 61% over the past twelve months. With borrowing costs skyrocketing and shareholders resisting additional dilution, the highly leveraged Bitcoin strategy at Metaplanet Inc. faces a critical stress test.
