Tencent has officially launched the WorkBuddy open platform today, marking a significant step toward building an AI ecosystem. The platform introduces ecosystem partners and opens up underlying Agent capabilities to smart hardware companies, industry application developers, and other third-party developers. This strategic move is being hailed by Tencent's PR Director, Zhang Jun, as a pivotal moment comparable to a major transformation the company underwent in 2011.
Zhang Jun drew a direct parallel between today's announcement and the landmark 2011 "Partner Conference" when Tencent declared its strategic shift toward comprehensive openness, famously vowing to "rebuild Tencent through openness." That same year witnessed the launch of WeChat, which rapidly evolved into a super app. Now, standing at the crossroads of artificial intelligence, Zhang emphasized that Tencent is once again raising the banner of openness with the WorkBuddy platform's arrival. "Connectivity and openness remain our eternal principle," he stated.
At the WorkBuddy ecosystem launch event, Liu Yi, Tencent Cloud Vice President and Head of Tencent CodeBuddy & WorkBuddy, articulated the platform's ambitious vision: "We aim to make WorkBuddy the operating system for the Agent era—not just a more powerful tool, but a platform capable of hosting all tools." This positioning underscores Tencent's intent to create a foundational layer for AI-driven applications across industries.
The platform has already secured initial partnerships with nine co-branded hardware devices from leading brands including Plaud, Rokid, Insta360, Ulanzi, iFlytek, Anker, Moma, and Jingdong Manufacturing, with many of these representing their respective product categories' first integration of Agent technology. Alongside the hardware push, the "Buddy Application" has officially launched, enabling partners to leverage WorkBuddy's Agent base capabilities combined with their own industry expertise to construct branded AI workstations.
The WorkBuddy open platform simultaneously releases three core capabilities: Skill (skills), Expert (specialized knowledge), and Connector (integration tools). Developers can access complete Agent functionality through standard APIs, providing a comprehensive technical foundation for ecosystem growth. This multi-pronged approach demonstrates Tencent's commitment to fostering innovation while maintaining the openness philosophy that has guided the company through previous technological shifts.
