Bitcoin and US Equities Split: 30-Day Correlation Drops to Lowest Point Since FTX Collapse

Bitcoin's long-established price linkage with US equities, as measured against the Nasdaq and S&P 500, has effectively ruptured. The correlation metric has now sunk to its weakest level since the FTX collapse in November 2022, officially ushering in a phase of decoupling between the cryptocurrency and traditional stock benchmarks.

Recent short-term data clearly delineates this trend. The 30-day rolling correlation dipped to as low as -0.299 in December 2025, before rebounding and steadying around 0.18 by January 2026. Concurrently, the three-month rolling correlation hovered near zero in mid-2026, eliminating the possibility of mere short-term statistical noise and confirming a structural weakening in the relationship between the two asset classes.

The divergence is further underscored by stark differences in performance. From late August 2025 through early 2026, Bitcoin fell approximately 43%, while the S&P 500 gained about 7% and gold surged an impressive 51%. After Bitcoin reached an all-time high of $126,000 in October 2025, it subsequently corrected by over 50% by mid-2026.

According to data compiled by Woofun AI, this divergence is primarily attributed to the deleveraging process that followed the cooling of the spot Bitcoin ETF frenzy. As the derivatives market has cooled, the amplifying effect of macroeconomic factors on cryptocurrency prices has diminished significantly. Over the long term, BlackRock Inc (NYSE: BLK) has pointed out that the 10-year correlation between Bitcoin and the S&P 500 stands at just 0.18.

Historically, the long-run average correlation between these assets has typically ranged between 0.25 and 0.32, often spiking during financial crises amid broad-based selling. The current reading below 0.20 moves toward the opposite extreme, signaling that Bitcoin is gradually shedding its "highly leveraged tech stock" characteristics, with its independent market behavior increasingly coming to the fore.
