At an event hosted by the Charlotte Economic Club, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the department's plan to repurchase "less liquid long-dated bonds trading at a discount, which frees up balance sheet capacity for banks and companies, allowing them to acquire more liquid US Treasuries in our auctions."

Bessent noted that although "no one truly knows what the right price is," he aims to steer prices closer to an equilibrium level through these measures.
