At 6 a.m., the care floor of the Tongyun Street Elderly Care Center in Tongzhou District is already coming to life. An 86-year-old resident, Grandpa Li, slowly rises, dresses himself, and neatly folds his bedding. A small white device resembling a spotlight on the wall above his bed catches the eye. Care Supervisor Ji Lei explains that it's a millimeter-wave smart device capable of real-time monitoring of vital signs like breathing and heartbeat while the resident lies in bed. "The signal covers the entire bed," she notes, "so whether an elderly person shifts position, has a leg draped over the edge, or gets up at night, an immediate alert appears on the smart monitoring screen in the hall, allowing caregivers to check on them right away." After a nutritious breakfast of cornmeal buns, millet porridge, and tea eggs, caregivers lead Grandpa Li and other residents downstairs to soak up the sun and do finger exercises.

Operated by Beijing Health Care Group, the center currently houses 62 of its 82 available beds. To ease family concerns, a dedicated WeChat group is created for each resident's family, with caregivers posting daily updates and addressing any questions or needs promptly. "Most of our 62 residents are local Tongzhou natives, with some living right in this sub-district," says Ji Lei, highlighting the advantage of a neighborhood-based care center—families live close by, making visits convenient while seniors receive professional care, effectively reducing the burden on households and enabling truly reassuring, comfortable aging in place. By 11 a.m., specially prepared meals for the upper-floor residents arrive—soft, low-salt, and low-oil dishes tailored to their chewing and digestive needs. Meanwhile, the community restaurant on the first floor is wafting out enticing aromas of braised fish, sautéed pork, pumpkin steamed pork, spicy shrimp, and stir-fried greens, with a display of ten dishes—six meat and four vegetable options—arranged neatly.

Far from being an exclusive dining hall for the elderly, this restaurant has become a popular "canteen for all ages," catering to the dietary needs of everyone from children to seniors. Since its opening last December, it has attracted a steady daily flow of 400 to 500 customers, earning a reputation as the neighborhood's go-to spot for affordable, tasty meals. From the moment one steps into the center, it's clear this is no ordinary care facility; children's laughter echoes from the first floor, complete with dedicated outdoor play areas. "Our goal is to break age barriers and embed the concept of 'all-age symbiosis' into every service scenario," explains Cao Yating, the center's director. "We're transforming the center from a space for seniors alone into a shared community hub, serving people of all generations under one roof."

This innovative approach marks the center's most distinctive achievement: dismantling generational divides and moving beyond the traditional model of singular eldercare. By linking with the Tongyun Street "Neighbor, Neighbor" service system, it has fostered a distinctive ecosystem of community co-building, intergenerational integration, and reciprocal support. The result is a neighborhood where "enjoying life" becomes the community's hallmark and "coexistence" the norm among residents. As dusk falls and children are picked up after their after-school activities, one grandmother, Zhao, who came to collect her granddaughter, offers high praise to reporters: "The environment here is wonderful and the service is attentive. When I'm too old to get around on my own, I'd definitely choose to live here too."
