Amazon-backed (AMZN) Anthropic is supporting AI-safety language in a Massachusetts Senate bill that would require major artificial intelligence developers to undergo independent evaluations of catastrophic risks from their models, putting the company at odds with Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI and Alphabet's Google (GOOG, GOOGL), The Information reported Thursday.

The proposal, included in a broader economic development bill, would require independent assessments of AI models every four months. A conference committee is working to reconcile the Massachusetts House and Senate versions before determining whether the provision remains in the final legislation, the report said.

OpenAI has opposed the Massachusetts provision, urging lawmakers to consider requirements more closely aligned with the Illinois law and warning that differing state rules could create fragmented oversight, according to the report.

Google has also raised concerns about additional state testing requirements, citing uncertainty over how model evaluations would be conducted, the report said, citing a person familiar with the company's position.

Anthropic, OpenAI and Google did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
