Thomson Reuters (TRI) has detected a courtroom cybersecurity breach in Canada involving the company's C-Track courtroom case management platform, according to a statement by three Canadian courts issued Thursday.

Thomson Reuters, on a special website it has created to handle the episode, stated that on June 30 it discovered unauthorized activity involving certain C-Track Canada information by a third party, and took steps to investigate the breach, including engagement of third-party cyber-experts and law enforcement.

The Thomson Reuters investigation found that in March, an unauthorized party obtained certain C-Track Canada files associated with the Court of Appeal for Ontario, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, and the Ontario Court of Justice.

Thomson Reuters advised Ontario's Ministry of the Attorney General of the incident on July 23, according to the statement.

Thomson Reuters has advised the courts that there is no evidence to date that the incident has resulted in identity theft and that systems used to process financial transactions related to court proceedings were not affected, the statement said.

The Ontario courts said C-Track remains operational and safe to use, while the judiciary continues to hear and decide cases without disruption.

The cybersecurity incident also extends to courtroom records in 11 US states and the Virgin Islands, the news service Reuters, a division of Thomson Reuters, reported on Wednesday.

A special call center regarding the courtroom information breaches will be established on Friday to handle inquiries from concerned individuals, Thomson Reuters said.
